[3] With thanks to Elizabeth McDonald for the research into Kate's descendants in Montgomery County, NY State, USA,
Working with Elizabeth, John Hutchison noted the entry of a Coll McGregor using a phonetic spelling - Cowl in the 1810 census for Montgomery County, Coll was not in the 1820 census. Going back to Scotland they found the marriage of Coll Drummond alias McGregor to Katherine and the baptism of their four children Anne (1786), Alexander (1788), Robert (1790) and Katherine (1793) in Kirktown, Balquhidder. Recently, thanks to Ancestry, Elizabeth found the baptism of Anne’s first three children at the Dutch Reform Church in Fonda, the county seat, her husband Duncan’s will probated in 1834, and Coll’s will probated in 1816. In his will Coll mentions his three children - Anne, Catherine and Robert – the three are the same names as those of the baptisms of Coll and Katherine in Kirktown in Scotland. Elizabeth has also been able to post Anne’s tree down three generations through son Alexander who died in 1897 and has his will also probated and online.
Parallelling this effort, John and Elizabeth continued to write about, and researched, the children and grandchildren of Rob Roy’s sons Ranald and Coll. She mentioned The Stirling Observer, And Midland Counties Advertiser of August 26th 1880 which wereI found in the John McGregor Collection. There is a lengthy letter to the editor about Rob Roy’s sons and Coll’s daughter Kate Col marrying Duncan Drummond alias McGregor, the same Duncan McGregor who was involved in the kidnapping with Robin Oig. John referenced the work of Bernice Guiliano who wrote that Kate Col and Duncan had eight children, four girls and four boys, with two boys emigrating to the United States, one of whom drowned. John mentioned that, by a process of elimination, the two were most likely Patrick and Coll. Son Coll is baptized in 1756 in Balfuil, (Bailefuil), Balquhidder.
Why do they think that Coll McGregor of Florida Township, Montgomery County is the son of Kate Col and grandson of Coll and great-grandson of Rob Roy? Coll is an unusual clan Gregor name for the time. Coll has his four children baptized in Kirktown in Balquhidder in Scotland and three are the same names as in the will of Coll of Florida. Finding Coll McGregor, son of Kate Col, grandson of Coll and great-grandson of Rob Roy, has been exciting. More so, of course, is that it puts Elizabeth's ancestor Malcolm in the same place as Rob’s great-grandson. This is more that serendipity. Now the questions are: are there other grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the area? If so, did some come initially together? Or did Coll, who is first listed in tax assessments in 1798 to 1803, come first. And how is Malcolm related to Coll? Following up on the 15 other McGregor families in Montgomery County, is the next task.

[4] Anne born in Kirktown in 1886 marries a Duncan McGregor whom we think is the one baptised Rhu Dumbarton 20.3.1776. He dies in Florida on 1.2.1837. Anne dies in 1818 and her husband marries again to an Elizabeth. The children of Anne include Anne (no data yet), Daniel (no data yet). Both are mentioned in Duncan's will of 1837. Marriage to Duncan is not found yet, probably 1808. Son Alexander appears to be the first child. His data are bap.15.9.1809 at the Dutch Reform Church in Fonda and died 30.3.1896 in Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York State, United States. Anne's son John was born in Florida in 1811 and died 15.11.1877 in Fultonville, Montgomery County, New York State. Anne's son Robert was baptised 6.1.1814 (which suggest I should put his uncle Robert the soldier's death at 1812 or 1813 instead of 1814) and died 25.12.1897 in San Mateo, San Mateo County, California. That's it for Anne's children.

[5] From Sheila McGregor there is this, (presumably from the oral histories in the John MacGregor Papers); Duncan commonly called Old Cuilt, or Doncha McParuaig, married the daughter of Coll. By her he had a son John, Lt in the Clan Alpine Fencibles.

[6] Amelia's History II - p372 This account is signed by Duncan McGregor, and dated Cuilt 12th Feb 1788, nearly forty-three years after the campaign. In other papers the writer is styled "Duncan McPharie," showing that his father's name was Patrick, and he is mentioned as a person of undoubted respectability. A marginal note in family copy of the "Baronage" in Sir Evan Murray MacGregor's handwriting calls the writer "the Standard Bearer of the Clan."

[8] MacPharrie might have been the same Duncan Drummond or MacGregor in Strathyre who had been involved with Rob Roy's sons in the kidnapping in December 1750 of Jean Key as a wife for Robin Oig, for which Robin was hanged in 1754. James Mor excaped from prison into exile in France, where he died, while Duncan was acquitted. His involvement could be the reason for Walter Scott mistakenly claiming that Rob Roy had a son named Duncan. He was probably the same Duncan who was married to Kate, a daughter of Coll and granddaughter of Rob Roy some time after the '45.
