Alaster was killed during the period when Glenorchy gave tacks to Clan Randall in Rannoch when many of the Menzies McGregor tenants were forced off their leased/tenanted lands of Rannoch hence the location of the death being near loch Tummell, which was also Menzies lands.
Alexander brother of Duncan

(WO31-127 & 138; WO42-30 M186, marriage cert, letter from FO dtd 13 Mar 1833 re his death; AL's 1803-1818; info D K Lloyd;)

Malcolm McGregor, commissioned as Ensign Edinburgh Royal Highland Volunteers 16 June 1803; left the Regiment before 1 October 1804. (perhaps identical to the Malcolm, above, Lieutenant of 30 May 1800 in the same Regiment) (WO25-228; 1804 Vol List)

Working out his ancestry is difficult as he was confused with another military Duncan active at exactly the same time. There is a genealogy from 1832 prepared by the then clan genealogist which states that Malcolm's genealogy goes back to the MacGregors of Dunan, who came from Roro in Glenlyon. In 1999 D K Lloyd contacted the clan to ask if there were further information. D K Lloyd's address at that time was 11 Spurgeon Street Colchester Essex CO1 2NS (phone number then +441206 792141): I did try the online directory but there was no entry, so he may have moved, gone ex directory or died I guess. His belief was that the genealogy went like this:

Alaster Mor son of [?Duncan] of Roro, settled in Dunan c 1500

John

John [in Camusericht, Rannoch] (charged to remove in 1595)

Duncan in Camusericht [styles chieftain of the Clann Eaian dhu (dark John)

Patrick in Dunan married to the daughter of Charles the Laird of Mackinnon.

D K Lloyd continues [Patrick] had 3 wives and their descents are recorded in the Clan Gregor book (Clan Gregor by Aemilia Murray MacGregor 1898/1901) He also had 3 illegitimate sons and I believe that Mr Malcolm MacGregor was the son of his second illegitimate son Donald's grandson, Duncan.

That is: Donald 7th son of Patrick (V in Dunan) married a daughter of Ewen MacGregor in Camuserrochd, sister to his half brother Neil's wife, by whom he had 6 daughter and 2 sons

John married a daughter of Gregor Mor MacGregor or Drummond in Little Fandui Strathbran by whom he had four sons Alexander Donald Lewis Duncan who married and had four children

D K Lloyd suggests that Malcolm was one of these 4.

[Note this would NOT be the Duncan in Learan who married Susan McGregor whose son Malcolm was born in 1779 and died 1847 and achieved the rank of Lt Colonel]

[3] Message from Carrie Poggio
Hello, I'm a direct descendent of an individual named Malcolm MacGregor. I estimate he was born sometime around 1800 but this is purely based on doing 25 years back each generation. My aunt Barbara has a portrait of him and he is dressed in military garb but we don't know much more. Here is the direct bloodline from him to me. I'm wondering who this person was, his significance, and if there is any additional information. My Aunt researched our family history in the late 1970's and now I am taking up the mantle. Malcolm MacGregor was as far back as she got on this line of the family:

Malcolm MacGregor married Fanny Gleed.

Their daughter named Emily MacGregor married Robert Augustus Joy.

Their daughter named Frances Ann Joy married Peter Wilson Petersen.

Their daughter named Maria Francesca Dolores Petersen married Sydney Talfourd Padgett.

Their son William Noble Padgett (1902-1990) married Virginia Porter Cram (1911-1975).

Their daughter Nancy Elizabeth Padgett married Richard Glenn Erickson.

Letter from Malcolm at St Malo 1883 (various)

Letter John MacGregor WS to Joachim McGregor Esq Venezuela

'... with interest received from my cousin John P. MacGregor British Vice Consul at Maracabo ... information of your descent from Col Malcolm MacGregor Consul at Panama ... for in the years 1882-3 ny father (also Malcolm) (SSH) was in correspondence with Malcolm Vice Consul about the completion of his title to the superiority which belonged to his father at Loch Dochart in Perthshire

I asked my father to enquire about the genealogy ... he gave no information except to say his father was Consul at Panama and to send a note which Col (sic) Hugh MacGregor of Portobello had given him in 1831

In my cousin's letter of 24th last he says that Sir Gregor of Bolivar had no children and your great grandfather Malcolm ... was supposed to be a brother of Sir Gregor. I may however tell you that there are no grounds for that supposition.

... I do not know if Col Hugh MacGregor is to be trusted as a genealogist and it is much to be regretted that he did not give the descent of Lt M. MacGregor's descent from John MacGregor of Dunan.

Letter from Malcolm MacGregor St Malo dated 1882
(Contains tree as stated and known) I hereby certify that this is a true copy of the pedigree given to me by Col Hugh MacGregor of Portobello at my request on taking leave of him in 1831 to join the 21st Fusiliers at Warrington dated St Malo France 9th Nov 1882

Letter of 1883 - 'It appears to me that my Father must have been connected with Mr Campbell of Lochdochart (RM - doesn't follow as documents show).

Panama 1827 - My dear Major Many thanks to you for the piece of Family History you have favoured me with. I derive one satisfaction from it namely that we are really related... signed Malcolm McGregor
